Giulio Alfano

Dr. Giulio Alfano is a Reader in Computational Mechanics at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering within the College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences at Brunel University London. He joined Brunel University in 2006 as a lecturer after serving as a lecturer in 'Scienza delle Costruzioni' (Mechanics of Solids and Structures) at the University of Naples 'Federico II' from 2001 to 2006.

His educational background includes:

• 5-year degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Naples 'Federico II' (1994)
• PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of Naples 'Federico II' (1997)
• Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Department of Aeronautics of Imperial College London (1998-2001)

Dr. Alfano's research focuses on modeling the behavior of materials, solids and structures both within and beyond their elastic limit, combining experimental methods with nonlinear numerical modeling. His work centers on cohesive-zone models that account for friction, plasticity, visco-elasticity, visco-plasticity and fatigue. His research spans multiple applications including rate-dependent failure of adhesive joints, composite delamination, nonlinear geomechanics, and modeling of concrete and reinforced concrete structures.

His publication record shows a strong focus on fracture mechanics, with recent articles examining adhesive bonding mechanisms, mode-I fracture resistance, and computational modeling techniques for structural analysis. His work demonstrates expertise in both theoretical development and experimental validation of mechanical models.

Dr. Alfano has secured significant research funding including:

• MOLAY-STRUDEL project (European Commission, 2016-2018) on modeling mixed-mode rate-dependent delamination
• EPSRC-funded project (2013-2016) on vortex induced vibration of deep-water flexible risers

He actively supervises PhD students in solid and structural mechanics, fracture mechanics, fatigue and buckling, working across automotive, aerospace, civil, and biomechanical engineering disciplines. Dr. Alfano is a member of the Mechanics of Solids and Structures Research Group at Brunel University, collaborating with researchers including Prof Hamid Bahai, Dr Rabee Shamass, and Prof Hussam Jouhara.
