Giulia Falato is a Department Lecturer in Chinese at the University of Oxford, specializing in the history of Sino-Western cultural relations with a focus on pedagogy, moral philosophy, and lexical innovation. She holds a PhD in Asian and African Civilisations from Sapienza University of Rome (2017). Her research examines educational theories in early imperial and medieval China, particularly through the lens of Jesuit missionary documents and cross-cultural exchanges.
Her work centers on analyzing how Western and Chinese intellectual traditions interacted during the Ming-Qing periods, with special attention to Alfonso Vagnone's Tongyou Jiaoyu (c. 1632) as a case study of pedagogical syncretism. Publications include a monograph on Vagnone's educational treatise and annotated translations of Xu Guangqi's texts. Recent articles explore Tang dynasty childhood socialization, Jesuit translation practices, and Ming-era family governance influenced by European concepts.
Publications consistently address themes of cultural negotiation and knowledge transfer, with methodologies spanning textual analysis, historical sociology, and comparative philosophy. No scientific awards are listed, though her work is recognized in East Asian studies circles. Teaching focuses on Chinese history and cross-cultural studies at Oxford.
