Gisela Helenius

Gisela Helenius is a Senior Lecturer at Örebro University, affiliated with the School of Medical Sciences and the Department of Medical Sciences. She holds a dual role as a lectureship in precision medicine and serves in the unit for Clinical Genomics at USÖ, a core facility for genomic analyses. She is also the Platform Scientific Director for Clinical Genomics Örebro under SciLifeLab. Currently, she is on leave of absence as Head of Unit at the ATMP Centre at Skåne University Hospital in Lund.

Her research focuses on circulating biomarkers for cancer diagnosis and monitoring, particularly leveraging liquid biopsies. Key areas include HPV-related cancers, precision medicine applications in prevention and diagnostics, and clinical genomics. She leads studies such as Allvos (detecting cancer via blood tests) and Circos (monitoring oropharyngeal cancer recurrence using HPV DNA).

Her work spans cervical cancer screening innovations, including self-sampling and molecular triage methods. Publications emphasize HPV genotyping, biomarker validation, and clinical applications of circulating tumor DNA. She collaborates on national and international projects, including studies in Uganda on HPV vaccine efficacy.

Her research teams are involved in clinical trials (e.g., Circos) and interdisciplinary projects integrating genomic data with clinical outcomes. She actively participates in conferences and publishes in journals like Clinical Cancer Research and Nature Medicine.
