Girish Choppala

Dr. Girish Choppala is a Research Associate at the University of Newcastle, affiliated with the College of Engineering, Science and Environment and School of Environmental and Life Sciences. His work focuses on environmental geochemistry, mineralogy, and contaminant dynamics, particularly the behavior of toxic metals and metalloids in soils, mine waste, and estuarine sediments.

Dr. Choppala investigates fundamental processes involving iron minerals and their role in immobilizing toxicants like arsenic, chromium, and antimony under variable environmental conditions. His research employs advanced techniques such as synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to resolve biogeochemical transformations at mineral-water interfaces.

The 15 most recent publications highlight his expertise in acid mine drainage systems, antimony retention mechanisms, and the stability of secondary minerals in sequestering hazardous elements. His methodological focus on XAS provides molecular-scale insights into metal sorption, redox reactions, and structural incorporation.
