معرفی
Gireesh Rajashekara serves as Associate Dean for Research and Advanced Studies and Professor in the Department of Pathobiology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign's College of Veterinary Medicine. His work bridges veterinary pathology and global public health through pathogen-focused research on foodborne and zoonotic diseases.
Research interests center on gastrointestinal pathogens (particularly Campylobacter jejuni), probiotic interventions, and zoonotic disease transmission in poultry systems. His fingerprint analysis shows dominant focus on chicken pathogens (80%), infectious agents (64%), and probiotic applications (62%), with significant work in gnotobiotics and human rotavirus. Current projects investigate host-pathogen dynamics in commercial poultry and pathogen impacts on child nutrition in resource-limited settings.
Recent publications demonstrate methodological diversity across in vivo poultry studies, Ethiopian household exposure assessments, and longitudinal infant cohort research. Key themes include pathogen colonization mechanisms, immune response modulation, and environmental contamination pathways – particularly regarding Salmonella, Escherichia coli, and reoviruses.
Dr. Rajashekara leads major collaborative initiatives including the EXCAM project (fecal contamination monitoring in Ethiopia) and the CAGED Research Team (Campylobacter-infant nutrition linkages), with research outputs spanning 153 publications including 135 articles and 13 reviews.
