Giovanni Pascoli (1855–1912) was a renowned Italian poet and academic, serving as Professor of Greek and Latin Grammar and Italian Literature at the University of Bologna. His tumultuous early life, marked by his father’s murder and subsequent family tragedies, deeply influenced his work and worldview. Pascoli studied at Bologna’s University, where he formed a close bond with Giosuè Carducci, and later taught there twice, revitalizing classical studies.
Education: He graduated from the Liceo Classico in Cesena (1873) after attending schools in Bologna, Florence, and Urbino. His academic journey was interrupted by political activism in anarchist movements led by Andrea Costa, leading to the loss of his scholarship (1875–1880).
Research focused on classical and Italian literature, blending poetic creativity with scholarly rigor. His involvement with revolutionary causes reflected his commitment to social justice, despite later distancing himself from radical politics. Pascoli’s legacy includes foundational work in philology and literary history, celebrated in his hometown’s renaming to San Mauro Pascoli.
