Giovanni Comandé

Giovanni Comandé is a Full Professor of Private Comparative Law at Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Pisa, Italy, with a PhD from SSSA and an LLM from Harvard Law School. He practices as an Attorney in Pisa (since 1995) and New York (since 1997), serves as a mediator, and founded both LIDER-LAB (www.lider-lab.it) and Smartlex (www.smartlex.eu), a Sant'Anna spin-off.

Comandé's research spans Law and Technology, Data Protection, Privacy, Ethics in legal research, Tort Law, Comparative and European Law, Health Law, and Information Society Law. He pioneers frameworks for AI regulation, cybersecurity, and digital governance, emphasizing the interplay between technical innovation and legal compliance in European contexts.

His recent publications demonstrate a clear trajectory toward integrating data science with legal analysis, particularly in explainable AI systems, legal process mining, and specialized NLP models for law. This work consistently bridges technical implementation with regulatory requirements across jurisdictions.

As Scientific Director, he leads major projects including LEADs (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2020), SoBigData++, and Predictive Jurisprudence, funded by EU, MIUR, CNR, and ESF. He directs the journals Opinio Juris in Comparatione and Rivista di Medicina Legale e del Diritto in Sanità, and serves on editorial boards in Italy and Colombia.

Comandé co-founded LIDER-LAB for interdisciplinary law-technology research and advises Smartlex on R&D, driving real-world applications of his academic work in legal tech innovation and regulatory compliance solutions.
