Giovanni Capoccia is a Professor of Comparative Politics at the University of Oxford’s Department of Politics and International Relations, and a Fellow of Corpus Christi College. He is currently a Visiting Professor at Sciences Po Paris’ Centre d’études européennes et de politique comparée. His research focuses on democratic self-defense against illiberal forces, political institutions, democratization, and transitional justice. Capoccia holds an MA Laurea from Rome I and a PhD from the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence.
Key research projects include the co-directed Back from the Brink: Countering Illiberalism in Liberal Democracies, analyzing short-term democratic defense strategies. His seminal work Defending Democracy (2005) earned the APSA Best Book Award in European Politics. He has held prestigious fellowships, including from the British Academy and Leverhulme Trust, and has taught advanced courses on comparative politics and research design.
Award-winning scholar, Capoccia’s work spans over 20 years, addressing democratic crises in interwar Europe and contemporary illiberal threats. His media contributions include high-profile analyses of French political crises, U.S. democracy under siege, and European far-right dynamics. Current projects explore legal restrictions on European far-right parties and double-discourse tactics by illiberal actors.
Administrative roles include Director of Graduate Studies in Politics (2024–2027) and past leadership of the MPhil in Comparative Government. His teaching spans graduate seminars on case study research and comparative methodology. Supervised students include Lena Schorlemer, Madhav Singh, and others.
