Giovanna Sozzi is Associate Professor at the Department of Engineering and Architecture, University of Parma, Italy, where she also serves as a member of the Board of Lecturers for the PhD in Information Technologies. She holds national scientific qualification as Full Professor in the field of Electronics (09/E3). Her academic and research career is deeply rooted in semiconductor device physics and modeling.
- Laurea in Electronic Engineering (Summa cum Laude), University of Parma, 1997
- PhD in Information Technology, University of Parma, 2002
- Researcher at University of Parma, 2002
- National Scientific Qualification as Full Professor, 2021
Her research focuses on numerical simulation and modeling of semiconductor devices, particularly GaN and GaAs-based HEMTs, thin-film CIGS solar cells, and power diodes in SiC and Ga₂O₃. She investigates device reliability, electro-thermal effects, and compact modeling for microwave and power applications. Her work combines deep physical insight with advanced computational techniques to optimize device performance and guide experimental development.
Her recent publications reveal a consistent focus on photovoltaic efficiency enhancement, device simulation, and emerging semiconductor materials. Topics include UV-C detection in Ga₂O₃, battery aging dynamics, and optimization of CIGS solar cells through layer engineering, indicating a strong trend toward sustainable energy technologies and advanced materials characterization.
She has received notable recognition including:
- National Scientific Qualification as Full Professor (2021)
- CNR-MADESS II Scholarship (2001) on reliability of compound semiconductor devices
Giovanna Sozzi has been actively involved in research funding and academic leadership. She served as Principal Investigator for a project funded by Fondazione Cariparma on low-cost solar cells and was part of the Horizon 2020 project Sharc25, aiming for super-high-efficiency CIGS solar cells. She teaches core courses such as Electronics for Renewable Energies (Master’s level) and Fundamentals and Laboratory of Digital Electronics (Bachelor’s level), contributing significantly to engineering education. She also leads orientation and tutoring activities for multiple degree programs and serves as PCTO contact for the Master’s in Electronic Engineering.
She collaborates extensively as a reviewer for leading journals including Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells, IEEE Journal of Photovoltaics, and Optik, demonstrating her active engagement in the scientific community.
