Giovanna Pappalardo serves as Full Professor of Applied Geology (GEO/05) at the Department of Biological, Geological and Environmental Sciences, University of Catania, where she belongs to the Earth Sciences Section. She maintains office hours on Mondays from 11:00 to 13:00 and can be contacted via email at giovanna.pappalardo@unict.it or by phone at +390954783715.
Professor Pappalardo qualified as a geologist in 1996 and earned her PhD in 'Geological Evolution of Mediterranean-Type Orogens' from the University of Catania in 1999. Her doctoral research focused on 'Study of Slope Movements in the Inner and Outer Sectors of the Apennine-Maghrebide Chain.' She qualified as Full Professor in 2018.
Her research spans three primary domains:
- Geomechanical analysis and integrated surveys for landslide risk assessment in strategic infrastructure and cultural sites
- Physical-mechanical characterization of rocks used in cultural heritage assets
- Hydrogeology and hydrogeochemistry of strategic aquifers in eastern Sicily
She teaches Applied Geology, Geomorphology, Landslide Risks and Rock Mechanics, and Environmental Geology at undergraduate and graduate levels. Her research integrates field observations, laboratory testing, and numerical modeling to address geological hazards and resource management.
Professor Pappalardo has held significant institutional roles:
- Councilor of the Regional Order of Geologists of Sicily (2017-2021)
- Member of the Department Board of Directors representing Associate Professors
- Department contact for University PLACEMENT in Geological Area
- Member of the National Association of Applied and Environmental Geology Board (2015-present)
- Alternate member of the University of Catania Disciplinary Board (elected 2021)
She leads major research initiatives including the University of Catania Three-Year Research Plan project on landslide risk assessment at cultural sites and participates in international projects like SIMIT-THARSY (Italy-Malta INTERREG program) focused on tsunami hazard reduction.
