Giovanna Galliciotti is a Research Fellow and Head of Research Group at the Institute of Neuropathology, part of the Faculty of Medicine at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). Her work focuses on neurodegenerative diseases, particularly those involving serpinopathies like familial encephalopathy with neuroserpin inclusion bodies (FENIB). She investigates protein misfolding, neuroprotection mechanisms, and therapeutic strategies for neurodegeneration.
Her research spans molecular biology, proteomics, and translational medicine, with a strong emphasis on neuroserpin’s role in disease pathogenesis. Key areas include gene therapy development, mitochondrial dysfunction in neuronal disorders, and microglial activation in post-COVID neurological conditions.
Galliciotti’s studies employ mouse models to explore disease mechanisms, such as ALS/FTD and glaucoma, and utilize advanced proteomic techniques to identify region-specific alterations in neuroserpin-deficient organisms. Her work bridges basic science and clinical applications, aiming to translate findings into novel treatments for devastating neurological conditions.
