Ginger E. Carney is a Professor and Dean of the College of Science at the University of Idaho. She holds a B.S. (1991) and Ph.D. (1998) in Genetics from the University of Georgia, followed by an NIH-funded postdoctoral fellowship at Oregon State University. Her career includes faculty roles at Georgia Institute of Technology and Texas A&M University before joining the University of Idaho in 2017.
Her research focuses on the genetic and physiological mechanisms underlying social behaviors, particularly in Drosophila melanogaster and African killifish (Nothobranchius). Key areas include reproductive behavior modulation, adipose-tissue signaling, and the role of miRNAs in behavioral regulation. She employs genetic, transcriptomic, and molecular approaches to decode gene interactions and their effects on behavior.
Carney has received numerous honors, including the University of Idaho Spring Commencement speaker role (2021), Western Academic Leadership Academy fellowship (2018–2019), and teaching awards at Texas A&M. Her work bridges molecular genetics, physiology, and evolutionary biology, with implications for understanding behavioral adaptations in diverse species.
Her research is supported by NIH grants and collaborations, and she leads a lab exploring topics such as diet’s impact on behavior and the evolutionary basis of mating preferences. She actively mentors students and contributes to academic leadership initiatives.
