Gina G. Bennett is an Assistant Professor of Global Studies at Coker University, specializing in early modern Atlantic World history with expertise in empires, economies, migrations, and women’s history. Her research focuses on the role of women in the 1690s Darien Scheme, a Scottish colonial venture in Panama, and its connections to Charleston. She holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Texas at Arlington, and dual B.S./M.A. degrees in History from Texas A&M University-Commerce.
Her teaching emphasizes experiential learning, such as field trips to historical sites like Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge shipwreck and engagement with local Sister City Programs. She has presented research at institutions like Leiden University (Netherlands) and the University of Glasgow (Scotland), and is preparing a chapter for European Colonial Failures, c. 1560-1800 (Amsterdam UP).
Bennett values Coker’s academic freedom and interdisciplinary approach, integrating arts and humanities to deepen historical analysis. She explores how early modern women navigated empire-building through investment, migration, and labor in failed colonial ventures.
