Professor Gina Brown is a renowned academic and clinician at Imperial College London, specializing in gastrointestinal cancer imaging with a focus on colorectal cancer staging. She holds the academic rank of Professor and has pioneered MRI techniques that have become global standards for assessing colon and rectal cancer patients. Her research has led to the incorporation of MRI-based strategies into guidelines like UK NICE and ESMO, improving treatment precision and reducing overtreatment.
Dr. Brown graduated from King’s College Hospital School of Medicine in 1988 and began her research career at the University of Wales, Cardiff in 1997. Her work has redefined staging methodologies, including defining tumor markers like venous invasion and peritoneal ulceration, which now form part of standard clinical practice. She led the MERCURY study, demonstrating MRI’s role in predicting high-risk surgical outcomes, and developed a staging model for low rectal cancer that optimizes surgical and chemoradiotherapy planning.
Her contributions extend to international collaborations, including the Beyond TME trial and partnerships with institutions like Ontario Cancer Care and MD Anderson. She has trained over 21 PhD/MD students and held leadership roles in national NHS initiatives such as the National TME MDT Development Programme. Her educational efforts include workshops for radiologists, surgeons, and oncologists globally, emphasizing standardized imaging reporting and multidisciplinary team collaboration.
Professor Brown’s work has advanced imaging-based prognostic systems for colon cancer and redefined anatomical definitions like the sigmoid take-off. She serves on expert panels for major guidelines, including the ASCO Neoadjuvant Therapy Guideline for Rectal Cancer and ESMO’s 2017 Oncology guidelines. Her research on tumor regression grading and ctDNA biomarkers aims to personalize therapy, while her advocacy for mentorship and equity in academia fosters supportive professional communities.
