Dr. Gillian Pepper is an Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department at Northumbria University, within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. She serves as Programme Director for the MSc in Health Psychology and Health & Wellbeing Lead for the Urban Futures Interdisciplinary Research Theme. Her research focuses on socioeconomic inequalities in health and wellbeing, particularly the impact of structural inequalities and perceived risk/safety on health behaviors. She is a member of multiple research groups, including the Healthy Living Lab and Perception Evolution & Behaviour Lab (PEBL). Dr. Pepper holds a PhD in Behavioural Sciences from Newcastle University (2015) and has contributed to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and education. Her work includes over 39 publications and a National Brain-Science Writing Prize (2006).
Her research spans topics like the Uncontrollable Mortality Risk Hypothesis, food insecurity, and hoarding behavior. Notable articles include studies on pandemic behavior during lockdown (2023), telomere dynamics as biomarkers of stress (2018), and cross-country analyses of life expectancy and decision-making (2017). She collaborates widely, including with Prof. Daniel Nettle and Dr. Melissa Bateson.
Dr. Pepper’s awards include the 2006 National Brain-Science Writing Prize. She advises on PhD students and has contributed to grants and policy initiatives, such as work with the Newcastle City Council Public Health Team and the COMSTAR lab at Newcastle University. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges evolutionary psychology, public health, and behavioral science.
