Gillian McFadyen is a Lecturer in the Department of International Politics at Aberystwyth University. She holds a PhD in International Politics and MSc degrees from Aberystwyth and Glasgow University. A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Welsh Crucible alumna, her work bridges academic rigor with creative methodologies.
- Research: Focuses on refugee studies, British/EU asylum systems, hospitality theories, and postcolonial analysis.
- Creative Practice: Co-convenor of the political embroidery group Stitched Voices, integrating craftivism into academic research.
Her research explores colonial legacies in UNHCR and neoliberal impacts on refugee hospitality. The 2020 book Refugees in Britain established her as a key voice in asylum discourse. Current projects include Digital Storytelling and Forced Migration: A Welsh Pathway to Peace? and the Motherhood Quilt and Guilt initiative.

Gillian supervises PhD students in refugee politics, coloniality, and human rights. She collaborates with Swansea and Northumbria Universities on interdisciplinary health projects and leads refugee simulation teaching modules.
