Gillian Lacey

Gillian Lacey is a Senior Lecturer in Electrical Engineering at Teesside University, affiliated with the School of Computing, Engineering and Digital Technologies and the Engineering Centre for Sustainable Engineering. She holds a PhD from Northumbria University and has extensive experience in both academia and industry, with a focus on sustainable energy systems and electric mobility.

Her research centers on electric vehicles, smart and wireless charging, vehicle-to-grid (V2G), battery degradation, and integration of renewable energy into low-voltage networks. She actively explores how EV batteries can be optimized for power storage and grid support. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes project-based learning, student-led pedagogy, and recruiting underrepresented groups into engineering.

The recent publications reflect a strong trend in smart grid technologies, renewable integration, and ethical engineering education. Her work combines technical modeling with sustainability and social impact, particularly in energy systems and EV infrastructure.

• Prix du Quebec (2014) – Winner for methodology supporting EV charging in electrical networks
• IEEE PES UKRI Chapter – Runner-up in Energy Challenges research presentation (2014)

Dr Lacey contributes to research grants and projects, notably as a Co-Investigator in the active SUNREY project focused on perovskite photovoltaics. She also advises on engineering ethics and sustainability. Her external role as Technical Director at eDub Services since 2013 highlights her industry engagement.

She is involved in initiatives promoting diversity in engineering, particularly targeting girls and minorities in higher education, and contributes to national and European projects on e-mobility and sustainable energy systems.
