Professor Gillian Juleff is a member of the Humanities and Social Sciences (HaSS) department at the University of Exeter's Cornwall campus. Her research focuses on early ferrous technology in Asia, particularly Sri Lanka, and post-conflict archaeology in Sri Lanka. She holds a BSc in Archaeological Conservation from UCL and a PhD from UCL on Sri Lankan iron and steel technology. Her work includes the discovery of wind-powered steel smelting furnaces in Sri Lanka, published in Nature in 1996. She collaborates with Jaffna University's Arts Faculty on post-conflict archaeology projects to explore community identities. She teaches archaeology, archaeometallurgy, and South Asian studies.

Her research interests include: experimental archaeology, heritage management, and the politicization of archaeology in conflict zones. She has secured grants from organizations like Balfour Beatty and ODA (£90k for Monsoon Steel project). She is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and has delivered over 45 invited lectures globally.
Her recent interdisciplinary work in Jaffna peninsula focuses on 'everyday archaeologies' to foster community belonging. She previously led conservation projects for UNESCO in Sri Lanka and served as English Heritage's first Archaeological Conservator for Southwest England.
