Gilles Ivaldi is a CNRS Junior Professor at the Center for Political Research (CEVIPOF) at Sciences Po Paris, specializing in radical right politics and populism in Europe and the United States. His work focuses on French electoral politics, party systems, and the intersection of populism with globalization and national sovereignty.
His research interests center on the comparative analysis of populist phenomena, with particular expertise in the French Front National/Rassemblement National and its European counterparts. Ivaldi examines how globalization processes, cultural backlash, and economic anxieties shape populist mobilization and electoral behavior across Western democracies. His methodology combines quantitative analysis of electoral data with qualitative case studies of party strategies and political discourse.
Recent publications reveal a strong focus on the 2022 French presidential election, the impact of the Ukraine war on radical right politics, and transnational patterns of populist support. His work demonstrates consistent thematic progression from French-specific cases toward broader comparative frameworks examining Western Europe and the United States.
Ivaldi has led the Sub-national context and radical right support in Europe (SCoRE) research project since 2016, funded by the Open Research Area program. His publications appear in leading journals including Electoral Studies, Political Research Quarterly, and West European Politics, alongside numerous book chapters and edited volumes on populism and European politics.
Based at CEVIPOF, Ivaldi contributes to one of Europe's premier political research centers, collaborating with international scholars on cross-national projects examining the structural and contextual determinants of radical right success. His work integrates electoral geography, political sociology, and comparative party politics to explain contemporary transformations in Western political systems.
