Prof. Giles E. D. Oldroyd serves as the Russell R Geiger Professor of Crop Science and Director of the Crop Science Centre at the University of Cambridge, an alliance between the University and the National Institute of Agricultural Botany. Based at the Sainsbury Laboratory since 2017, his work bridges fundamental plant science with agricultural impact through sustainable nutrient uptake research.
His foundational education includes a PhD from the University of California Berkeley (1998) and postdoctoral research at Stanford University, where he shifted focus from plant-pathogen interactions to nitrogen fixation in legumes.
Prof. Oldroyd's research pioneers engineering nitrogen-fixing capabilities in non-legume crops through plant-microbe symbiosis, directly targeting reduced fertilizer dependency for Sub-Saharan African smallholders. This work spans molecular plant biology, sustainable cropping systems, and global food security policy, emphasizing equitable agricultural technology transfer.
His distinguished recognition includes:
- Election to the Royal Society (2020)
- EMBO Membership (2020)
- Foreign Membership in the US National Academy of Sciences (2021)
He currently leads a major Gates Foundation/FCDO-funded international consortium engineering nitrogen-fixing cereals, while directing the Crop Science Centre's translational research pipeline from laboratory discoveries to field applications. His advisory role spans Cambridge's Global Food Security initiative and the Crop Science Centre's industry-academic partnerships.
The Oldroyd laboratory operates within the Sainsbury Laboratory's collaborative ecosystem, coordinating with the John Innes Centre, NIAB, and African research networks to advance climate-resilient crop development.
