Dr. Gilbert Shang Ndi is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Research Section “Arts & Aesthetics” at the University of Bayreuth, affiliated with the Bayreuth International School of African Studies (BIGSAS). He holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Bayreuth (2014) and degrees from the University of Yaoundé I, Cameroon. His research focuses on African literature, postcolonial studies, and cultural analysis, with a particular emphasis on violence in literature, colonial legacies, and comparative narratives.
Professional Experience includes teaching courses such as “Introduction to African Poetry” (2013) and “Les Romances en Europe” (2014), and leadership roles in academic initiatives like co-coordinating the workgroup Making of Meaning in Africa (2013–2014). He has delivered guest lectures globally, including in Peru, Bolivia, and Cameroon, and has organized events such as Achebe Night (2013) and panels at international conferences.
His research interests span postcolonial literature, cultural studies, and the intersections of visual culture with colonial and postcolonial discourse. His recent publications explore themes like the aesthetics of subversion, postcolonial temporalities, and the politics of naming in African literature. He has received notable awards including the DAAD Preis 2013 and the Fritz Thyssen Postdoctoral Fellowship.
Dr. Ndi is actively involved in academic networks, serving as Secretary General of JALLA (Jornadas Andinas de Literatura) for Africa Section since 2016 and contributing to initiatives such as the African Good Governance Network (AGGN).
