Gilbert M. Khadiagala is the Jan Smuts Professor of International Relations and Head of the Department of International Relations at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. He holds a Ph.D. in International Studies from the Johns Hopkins University’s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). His research focuses on security dynamics, conflict mediation, and political stability in Eastern and Southern Africa, particularly in the Great Lakes region. He has extensive teaching experience across Kenya, Canada, and the United States.
Dr. Khadiagala’s work emphasizes post-conflict reconstruction leadership and electoral conflict mediation in Kenya and Zimbabwe. His publications include seminal works like War and Peace in Africa’s Great Lakes Region (2017) and Regional Cooperation on Democratization and Conflict Management in Africa (2018), which analyze regional security frameworks, democratic transitions, and institutional cooperation. His research bridges theoretical conflict studies with practical policy interventions in Africa.
His academic contributions span books on Sudan’s peace processes, African interveners in civil conflicts, and mediation strategies. His current projects explore leadership roles in post-conflict recovery and electoral dispute resolution mechanisms.
