Gilbert Achcar is a Professor at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, specializing in Middle Eastern politics and contemporary Arab world studies. He delivered a comprehensive lecture series in May 2012 examining the revolutionary processes unfolding across the Arabic-speaking world.
His research interests focus on the complex interplay of socio-economic factors, political structures, and geopolitical dynamics shaping the Arab region. Achcar analyzes the "revolutionary process" concept to describe the ongoing transformations in the Arab world, emphasizing how economic stagnation, high unemployment (particularly among educated youth), and rentier state structures have created conditions for widespread upheaval.
Achcar's work examines how regional development stalemates extend beyond the global economic crisis, rooted in the predominance of rentier, patrimonial or neo-patrimonial states that inhibit productive investment. His analysis incorporates international factors, particularly how oil wealth has influenced foreign interventions and the perpetuation of archaic political systems in the region.
His May 2012 lecture series systematically explored:
- Socio-economic factors behind the regional explosion
- Political and geopolitical dimensions of the uprisings
- The revolutionary process with multiple state and social manifestations
- Political and geopolitical assessment and future outlook
