Gil Andrei Fontimayor is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Graphic Design at Virginia Commonwealth University's School of the Arts. He is also affiliated with the Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW in Switzerland through his graduate studies and collaborative design projects. His practice bridges art, design, and technology, operating at the intersection of classical and quantum paradigms.
Fontimayor holds a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications and Advertising from VCU’s College of Humanities and Sciences and completed graduate studies in visual communication at the Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst Basel FHNW. His interdisciplinary background informs a unique pedagogical and creative approach grounded in both academic and professional experience, including prior roles at The Wall Street Journal in New York City.
His research and artistic interests include creative coding, generative AI, ecological shifts, quantum multiverse theory, and the fragility of subatomic particles. He explores these themes through moving graphics, acoustics, photography, painting, printmaking, and experimental typography. His conceptual framework draws from anthropological and philosophical works, such as Eduardo Kohn’s 'How Forests Think' and Michel Serres’ 'Biogée', as well as immersive environmental studies.
Although no peer-reviewed articles are listed, his recent projects—from 2022 to 2024—demonstrate a consistent trajectory in exploring elemental forces (earth, air, water, fire), quantum phenomena, and socio-political metaphors like those in 'Strange Fruit'. These works employ tools such as Hydra (live coding), NASA scientific imagery, and generative AI, reflecting a deep engagement with both digital and analog processes.
- Recipient of inclusion in the permanent collection of Plakatsammlung der Schule für Gestaltung, Basel, Switzerland.
- Exhibited internationally, including solo and group shows across Europe.
- Featured at UArt Media Fest 2024 in Kyiv.
Fontimayor has led design initiatives for academic institutions, including serving as head of design for the CIVIC Forum at FHNW, where he developed inclusive visual identities to foster community dialogue. He operates an independent consultancy for educational, cultural, and creative institutions globally. While no formal advising or grant details are mentioned, his role as an art director and designer for academic exhibitions indicates mentorship and collaborative leadership.
His ongoing projects, such as Tree Bark Studies and Quantum typeface design, reflect a sustained inquiry into natural forms, material experimentation, and the duality between technological mediation and organic expression. These efforts underscore his commitment to bridging art, science, and humanistic inquiry within contemporary design practice.
