Gidong Kim is an Associate Professor at the Department of Political Science and Diplomacy, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, and a Co-Researcher at the Institute for Demographic Change and Sustainable Democracy at HUFS. He recently served as a Korea Program Postdoctoral Fellow (2023-2025) at the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (APARC), with a Visiting Scholar role at Stanford's Next Asia Policy Lab (Summer 2025).

His research centers on comparative political behavior and economy in East Asia, particularly exploring how nationalism influences redistributive preferences, immigrant attitudes, and foreign policy opinions (e.g., military spending, anti-China sentiments). He employs mixed-method approaches, including interview analysis, survey experiments, and cross-national data.
His work has been published in journals like Journal of East Asian Studies, Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, and Social Science Quarterly. Notable research includes a dissertation on nationalist legacies of authoritarian regimes and their impact on welfare systems in new democracies.
