Gianni Stefano is a Full Professor at the Department of Biochemical Sciences, Sapienza University of Rome. He previously held roles as Associate Professor (2012–2016) and Visiting Professor at the University of Cambridge (2012–2016). His research focuses on protein folding, intrinsically disordered proteins, and structural biology. He has been recognized with awards including the Vincenzo Caglioti Prize (2009) and EMBO Fellowship (2013). Stefano earned his PhD in Biochemistry from Sapienza University (2003) and completed postdoctoral work at the MRC Centre for Protein Engineering, Cambridge.
His research interests span protein dynamics, molecular interactions, and the interplay between structure and function. Key contributions include studies on protein folding pathways, frustration in folding, and coupled binding-folding mechanisms in disordered proteins. He has authored over 110 publications, achieving an H-index of 31. Stefano also serves on editorial boards for journals like Biophysical Chemistry and Scientific Reports.
- Awards: Global Young Academy Member (2014), Lincei Prize, EMBO Fellowship
- Leadership: Head of Biochemistry PhD School at Sapienza since 2017
