Gianluca Gallo is a Professor at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine, Temple University, holding joint appointments in the departments of Neural Sciences, Cancer and Cellular Biology, and the Center for Neural Development and Repair. His research focuses on neuronal development, axon branching mechanisms, and the role of mitochondria and glycolysis in axonal morphogenesis. He investigates how extracellular signals regulate the axonal cytoskeleton and axon injury responses.
Education includes a PhD from the University of Illinois (1996) and postdoctoral training at the University of Minnesota (2002). Gallo has received prestigious awards such as the Leon Levy Fellowship and grants from the Alzheimer’s Association and American Heart Association. His work spans high-resolution imaging of cytoskeletal dynamics, mitochondrial function, and axonal injury mechanisms.
Scientific awards include the Blas Frangione Foundation Grant (2014) and Scientist Development Grant from the American Heart Association (2013). Research highlights include uncovering PI3K signaling’s role in axonal actin patches and mitochondria-dependent mRNA translation in branch formation.
His publications explore topics like axonal bioenergetics, palmitoylation in injury signaling, and the interplay between neurotrophins and cytoskeletal dynamics. Ongoing work aims to develop neuroprotective strategies for spinal cord and traumatic brain injury.
