Gian Luca Podesta is a Full Professor of Economic History at Parma University and an Adjunct Professor at Bocconi University (Milan) and Genoa University. He teaches courses such as Global History, Global Finance and Geopolitics, and Economic History, primarily at the undergraduate (First cycle degree) and postgraduate (Second cycle degree) levels in Economics and Management.

His research spans Italian colonialism, economic history, and the intersections of politics, society, and finance in the Italian Empire. Key areas include public finance in the Modern Era, Italian industrial development in East Africa, Fascist economic policies, and demographic planning in colonial contexts. His work often examines cultural imperialism, racial ideologies, and urbanization in African and Balkan colonies.
Recent publications focus on Italian economic strategies, monetary transitions in East Africa, and the socio-political myths of empire-building. His articles explore themes like the twofold path of the last European empire and the impact of colonial currencies on indigenous societies.

Podesta has received grants from Bocconi University (1992, 1994, 1997) and participated in national research programs (PRIN) on financial history and colonial monetary systems.
