Gheorghe Asachi

Gheorghe Asachi was a pioneering academic and founder of the first higher technical education institution in Romania, the School of Engineers established in 1813 within the Princely Academy of Iași. As a Professor, he taught mathematics, engineering, and architecture in Romanian for the first time, laying the foundation for modern technical education in the country. His legacy is enshrined in the Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iasi, named in his honor.

Asachi's contributions extended beyond academia: he founded institutions like the Vasilian Gymnasium, the School of Arts and Trades, and the State Archives in Iasi. His roles as engineer, architect, and diplomat reflect his interdisciplinary expertise. The university's coat of arms and emblem prominently feature symbols tied to his legacy, including the compass and square representing engineering, and his statue serves as a central icon.

His work emphasized rigorous geometric reasoning and the application of science to societal challenges. The motto 'SCIENCE IS POWERFUL' on the university's coat of arms, derived from his philosophy, underscores his belief in knowledge as transformative power.
