Gesina Schwalbe

Prof. Dr. Gesina Schwalbe is a Professor of Dendrology and Tree Nursery Science at Erfurt University of Applied Sciences, faculty of Landscape Architecture, Horticulture and Forestry. She chairs the LGF Audit Committee and has held this position since 2009. Previously, she worked as a freelance forestry engineer (2004-2009) and held roles in the Thuringian State Forestry Administration.

Education:

• 1987–1992: Forestry, TU Dresden (Graduate Forest Engineer)
• 1994–1998: Dr. rer. silv. from TU Dresden, thesis: 'Investigation of site conditions and soil and stream water quality in the Zottelbach/Thuringian Slate Mountains catchment area'

Research Focus: Her work spans dendrology, forest ecology, carbon sequestration dynamics, and tree nursery science. Key projects include analyzing carbon stocks in Thuringian forests for Kyoto Protocol implementation and studying forest site conditions in watershed areas. Her research integrates ecosystem modeling, climate change impacts, and sustainable forest management.

Publications: Recent articles focus on carbon dynamics in Central European forests, ecosystem modeling, and forest nutrition, with consistent themes in climate change mitigation and sustainable forestry practices spanning her career.

Teaching: Courses include Fundamentals of Forest Botany, Forest Site Science, Applied Botany, Nursery Management, and Sustainable Crop Production. She also covers forest protection and arboriculture.
