Gertrude Buck (1871-1922) was Professor of English at Vassar College from 1897 until her death. Holding PhD in rhetoric from the University of Michigan, she revolutionized Vassar's English curriculum through democratic teaching methods emphasizing writing as social action. She co-founded the Vassar Dramatic Workshop (1916) and established the first playwriting course at Vassar, directly enabling Edna St. Vincent Millay's early theatrical work.
Her scholarship pioneered feminist rhetorical theories connecting language to social organization. Beyond academia, she co-founded the Poughkeepsie Community Theatre to foster cross-class artistic collaboration.
Professor Buck published poetry and influential textbooks advancing progressive education principles. Her interdisciplinary legacy includes foundational contributions to drama education and community arts, recognized through Vassar's Gertrude Buck Drama Fund and historical commemorations.
