Gertjan Willems is an Associate Professor at the University of Antwerp and a Visiting Professor at Ghent University. His research spans Belgian cinema, media and cultural identity, media and nation-building, film policy, and adaptation studies. He has published 3 books and 40+ peer-reviewed papers, curating film programs for festivals and institutions.

His recent publications focus on European film remakes, alternative cinema, and nationalist discourses in Flemish films. Notably, his work on Fugitive Cinema highlights the role of alternative distribution systems in shaping 1960s-70s film culture. He has also co-edited volumes on media and Flemish nation-building, analyzing the interplay between cinema and political ideologies.
Willems actively engages in public discourse, as seen in his contextualization of Robbe De Hert’s De Bom (2021) and his analysis of the Daens myth in Flemish cinema. He contributes to interdisciplinary collaborations, archival research, and debates on the evolution of creative screen policies in Flanders.
