Professor Sir Gerry McCormac is the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Stirling since 2010. He leads strategic initiatives enhancing research, international partnerships, and student facilities. His academic career includes roles as Pro Vice-Chancellor at Queen’s University Belfast and research in space physics, carbon dating, and global carbon cycling.
Education & Research: Holds a science background with NASA Dynamics Explorer satellite program involvement and leadership at Queen’s University Belfast’s Carbon Dating facility. His research focuses on carbon cycling and historic monument dating. Current interests include social marketing, aquaculture, and dementia research influencing global policy.
Leadership & Achievements: Spearheaded INTO University Partnerships joint venture expanding international student recruitment, established transnational education partnerships across UAE, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Vietnam. Secured £27m funding for the Stirling and Clackmannanshire City Region Deal, enabling Scotland’s International Environment Centre and new Institute of Aquaculture. Recognized with Times and Sunday Times UK Sports University of the Year 2020 for athletic infrastructure.
Awards & Roles: Knighted in 2021 for education and economic contributions. Served as Convenor of Universities Scotland (2020–2022) and Vice President of Universities UK. Holds multiple fellowships and board memberships in academic and industry organizations.
