Gernot Sydow

Prof. Dr. Gernot Sydow serves as Professor of European Administrative Law at the University of Münster's Faculty of Law, holding the Chair since 2015. He concurrently acts as Dean of Studies and Academic Director of the Münster International Law School, with primary affiliation to the Institute for International and Comparative Public Law. His international engagements include visiting professorships at Universidad de Navarra (Pamplona), Université Jean Moulin Lyon III, and Turkish-German University of Istanbul, alongside Erasmus partnerships with Bordeaux, Reims, Pamplona, and Turkish-German institutions.

Sydow's research centers on comparative German and European public law, with specialized focus on British and French constitutional systems, European administrative law, legal history, and law-religion dynamics (particularly freedom of religion and state-religious law interfaces). His work also examines political parties as democratic intermediary organizations. He regularly supervises comparative law-oriented doctoral candidates through cotutelle arrangements with foreign universities and hosts international researchers at Münster.
