Germán Pallares-Avitia is an Assistant Professor at the School of Architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). He holds a PhD in Architecture from RISD (2021). His work focuses on the intersection of modernization, cultural relations, borders, and politics in Latin America and the U.S., with a particular emphasis on the Mexico-U.S. borderlands. His interdisciplinary research draws on border studies, Chicano studies, gender studies, environmental history, and urbanism, exploring post-colonial and decolonial frameworks.
His recent publication, "The Borderlands at Display" (2023), examines border consciousness and spatial politics. His research also includes studies on cultural centers in Ciudad Juárez and Matamoros, as well as analyses of urban conditions in border regions. Pallares-Avitia’s work bridges architecture, history, and sociology, offering critical insights into transnational identities and migration.
He has contributed to edited volumes such as Frontera Nation (2023) and studies on Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta. His PhD dissertation, Life on the Border: Constructing the México-US Borderlands, 1961-1971, explores the socio-spatial dynamics of border regions during a pivotal period of modernization.
