معرفی
Gerhard Weber is a Full Professor and Head of the Department of Evolutionary Anthropology at the University of Vienna. He leads the 'Virtual Anthropology' research group and the Vienna Micro-CT Lab, focusing on digital approaches to hominin evolution, fossil reconstruction, and biocultural evolution. His work bridges anthropology, archaeology, and biomechanics through advanced 3D imaging and computational analysis.
- Current Positions: Full Professor (2019-present), Department Head (2019-present), Vienna Micro-CT Lab Head (2010-present)
- Research Networks: Founder and Head of HEAS (Human Evolution & Archaeological Sciences, 2021-2023), EVAN Society Chairman (2009-present)
His research centers on quantitative analysis of hominoid skulls and teeth, with key contributions to understanding Neanderthal-modern human interactions, the origin of the Venus of Willendorf, and Middle Pleistocene hominin classification. He pioneered micro-CT applications for fossil analysis and co-developed the European Virtual Anthropology Network (EVAN) to disseminate digital methodologies.
The 15 most recent publications span biocultural evolution, fossil classification, and digital reconstruction. Notable works include studies on the 2025 Ephesos cranium, 2023 cranial capacity relationships, 2022 Venus of Willendorf material origin, and 2021 Nesher Ramla hominin analysis. These articles reflect his expertise in virtual anthropology, biomechanics, and interdisciplinary evolutionary studies.
Scientific honors include the 2022 Great Science Award from Lower Austria. He has served on multiple professional boards, including ESHE (European Society for Studying Human Evolution) and the NESPOS Society, and is Chief Editor of the 'digital@rchive of Fossil Hominoids' since 2002.
