Prof. Gerhard Heimerl (1934–2021) was a distinguished academic and transport scientist. He served as Professor of Railway Engineering and Head of the Institute of Transport Sciences at the University of Stuttgart from 1975 until his retirement in 2000. He played a pivotal role in integrating the former 'Friedrich List' University of Transport into TU Dresden, leading the Integration Commission in 1992. His work shaped interdisciplinary transport sciences at TU Dresden, which he regarded as a unique experiment. He received an honorary doctorate from the TU Dresden Faculty of Transport Sciences in 1995 for his contributions.

His expertise spanned railway engineering, transport systems design, and policy. He emphasized cross-modal and interdisciplinary approaches to transport challenges, advocating for holistic solutions in civil engineering and urban planning.
