Prof. Gerd Patrick Bienert is a Professor for Crop Physiology at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) since 2020, affiliated with the TUM School of Life Sciences. His research focuses on understanding metalloid and water efficiency mechanisms in crops, including transcriptional, developmental, and signaling responses to stress. He holds a PhD from the University of Copenhagen and conducted postdoctoral research at UCLouvain. Key career milestones include leadership of an independent research group at the Leibniz Institute (2013–2020) under the Emmy Noether Fellowship.
Research interests span plant physiology, nutrient transport mechanisms, and biotechnological optimization of crop traits for food security. His work integrates molecular genetics, biochemical studies, and systems biology to address agricultural challenges. Notable contributions include studies on Nodulin26-like proteins and their roles in metalloid detoxification and boron transport.
Prof. Bienert has received prestigious awards such as the Emmy Noether Fellowship (2013), Chargé de Recherches (Belgian National Funds, 2011–2013), and a Marie Curie Fellowship (2009–2011). His research group at TUM continues to explore mechanisms to enhance crop resilience and sustainability.
