Gerardo Brown-Manrique

Gerardo Brown-Manrique is a Professor of Architecture and Interior Design at Miami University, where he has served since 1988. He also directs the Architecture Graduate Studies program and affiliates with the Latin, Latino/a and Caribbean Studies department. His expertise spans Housing for Large Numbers, Typology, and Critical Regionalism.

He holds a Master of Architecture from Cornell University and dual bachelor’s degrees in Architecture and Building Sciences from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His professional career includes roles as a licensed architect in Oklahoma and Ohio, and collaborative work with Atelier d'Architecture et de Design Jim Clemes in Luxembourg.

Research focuses on architectural history, particularly Oswald Mathias Ungers and Rudolf Fränkel, as well as urban design and preservation. His publications include monographs on key architects and critical analyses of architectural movements. Awards include Graham Foundation grants and a Fulbright Lecturing Award.

Teaching spans architectural studios, typology courses, and regional studies. He has contributed to design guidelines for Oxford’s historic districts and participated in high-profile international exhibitions like the Paris Les Halles project.
