Gerard Staats is a Lecturer at Tilburg University’s Fiscal Institute Tilburg (FIT) and part of the Tax Economics department within the Tilburg School of Economics and Management (TiSEM). He holds a PhD from Tilburg University (2014) and is a Senior Manager at BDO Tax & Legal’s Office of Professional Services. His research focuses on taxation of assets (Dutch 'box 3'), retirement provisions (pensions, annuities), and tax aspects of owner-occupied housing. He teaches courses on Tax Economics, Principles of Income Tax, and Tax Law fundamentals.
Key external roles include membership in the Commission on Pensions (Nederlandse Orde van Belastingadviseurs) and contributions to academic publications like NL Fiscaal and Vakstudie. His work addresses tax ethics, pension law reforms, and practical tax planning challenges. Recent articles include analyses of pension division in divorce, simplifying annuity legislation, and family mortgage taxation.
