Gerard Sanacora is the George D. and Esther S. Gross Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University and serves as the Director of the Yale Depression Research Program and Co-Director of the Yale New Haven Hospital Interventional Psychiatry Service, actively contributing to both clinical and preclinical research in psychiatry.
Research Interests: Dr. Sanacora’s work focuses on the pathophysiology of mood and neuropsychiatric disorders, with a particular emphasis on the role of GABA and glutamate neurotransmitter systems in depression and treatment response. His research integrates preclinical rodent models and human neuroimaging studies to explore the effects of stress and novel therapeutics like ketamine and esketamine. He leads or collaborates on phase II clinical trials, including those evaluating rapid-acting antidepressants and combination therapies.
Recent Articles highlight his expertise in glutamate metabolism, neuroplasticity, ketamine’s cognitive effects, and genetic factors in treatment response. His team’s work has pioneered the use of novel MRS methodologies and biomarker development for antidepressant research.

Education & Training: Dr. Sanacora completed an MD-PhD Medical Scientist Training Program at SUNY Stony Brook (PhD in Physiology/Biophysics 1992; MD 1994), followed by psychiatry residency and NIH-funded Neuroimaging Fellowship at Yale.
Current Clinical Trials include studies on ketsamine for adolescent suicidality, imaging synaptic density in psychiatric disorders, and vaccination strategies for transplant patients.
Collaborators include John Krystal, Samuel Wilkinson, Sina Nikayin, and Douglas Rothman, with affiliations spanning the National Center for PTSD, Yale Center for Experimental Neuroimaging, and Abraham Ribicoff Research Facilities.
