Professor Gerard McCartney is Professor of Wellbeing Economy at the University of Glasgow, affiliated with the School of Health & Wellbeing and Urban Studies & Social Policy. His work integrates economics and public health to address systemic health inequalities and promote wellbeing economies.
Education: He graduated in Medicine from the University of Glasgow, completed GP vocational training, and earned an honours degree in Economics and Development from the University of London. He also holds an MD from the MRC Social and Public Health Sciences Unit.
Research Interests: His research spans wellbeing economies—redesigning economic systems for health, equity, and ecological outcomes—population health, health inequalities, and the political economy of health. He evaluates public policies and their impact on health outcomes.
Recent Work: His 2025 publications focus on austerity’s impact on UK mortality, welfare reforms, and inequality trends in British cities. His work critiques neoliberal policy and its public health consequences.
Collaborations & Grants: He collaborates extensively with researchers like David Walsh and Vittal Katikireddi, contributing to major systematic reviews and policy evaluations. His research is supported by institutions like the Glasgow Centre for Population Health and NHS Health Scotland.
