Geraldine Morris is a researcher and faculty member at the Department of Dance, School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, Roehampton University. She holds a PhD in Dance from the University of Surrey at Roehampton (2000) and has a BA in Humanities from The Open University and an MA from the University of Surrey.
Her research focuses on philosophical issues of identity and style in ballet, the relationship between training and choreographic practice, and the intersection of ballet with plastic arts. She is a specialist in choreographic analysis, particularly of Frederick Ashton's work, and explores authenticity and artistic intent in performance.
Her recent publications include the 2022 article Historical Schooling: Ballet Style and Technique, the 2021 review Princess Poutiatine and the Art of Ballet in Malta, and the 2020 digital works on Ninette de Valois' 1947 syllabus. Earlier works include her 2012 book on Ashton's ballets and the 2017 edited volume Rethinking Dance History.
Morris has served on the editorial board of Dance Research and as a consultant for Akram Khan's charity AKCT. She has examined BA, MA, and PhD programs externally, including roles at the Royal Academy of Dance and Truro College. Her consultancy includes the Royal Opera House's 75th Anniversary program and film collaborations on Bob Fosse.
