Geraldine M. Grant is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Biology at George Mason University, with a focus on Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) and fibroblast biology. She serves as faculty in the Biology Department (Research and Instructional) and affiliate faculty in the School of Systems Biology. Dr. Grant teaches courses including BIOL213, BIOL498, and BIOL485, advocating for undergraduate research through programs like Biology Research Semester and OSCAR Scholars.
Education:
- PhD, Cell Biology & Toxicology, Dublin City University (1993)
- BA Mod, Biochemistry, Trinity College Dublin (1987)
Her research explores how unregulated wound repair by fibroblasts drives IPF, using cell biology, molecular techniques, and 3D tissue models to identify signaling defects, mitochondrial dysregulation, and potential therapeutics. Recent work includes hydrogel models and BI-1 protein studies to target fibroblast survival.
Key scientific awards include the Dean’s Mentorship Award (2024). She collaborates with the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Inova Fairfax Hospital, and NIH, mentoring students in RNA sequencing, cytokine analysis, and drug delivery systems.
