Gerald McGwin

Gerald McGwin is a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Public Health. He holds additional appointments as Associate Professor in the School of Medicine's Ophthalmology and Surgery departments, and Senior Scientist roles across multiple interdisciplinary centers including the Vision Science Research Center and Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and Education (COERE). He has been affiliated with UAB since 1998, serving as Vice Chair of Epidemiology and Interim Department Chair from 2015-2017.

McGwin's education includes a PhD in Epidemiology (UAB, 1998), an MPH from Harvard University (1995), and a BS in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of Vermont (1993). His research focuses on injury epidemiology, ophthalmic outcomes, surgical outcomes, and healthcare disparities. Key areas include eye injury prevention, arthritis management, trauma care, and clinical trial methodologies.
