Gerald F. Murray is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Florida, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. With extensive fieldwork in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and 15+ other countries, his work bridges applied anthropology and environmental sustainability.
- Phases of research: Agrarian systems in Hispaniola, agroforestry, urban microenterprise, educational sabotage, and comparative religion
- Key methodologies: Contract research for USAID, World Bank, and NGOs
His research on tree-planting in Haiti and microenterprise in the Dominican Republic has produced three books, 27 articles, and 60 applied reports. He has lectured extensively on the anthropology of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, including a college course on the Anthropology of Judaism.
Teaching includes undergraduate/graduate courses on Caribbean anthropology, anthropological linguistics, and religion. He has supervised M.A. and Ph.D. students from diverse regions (Haiti, Brazil, Philippines, etc.), many funded by NSF, Wenner-Gren, and Tinker grants.
