Gerald Early is the Merle Kling Professor of Modern Letters in the Department of African and African-American Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. He has been a faculty member since 1982 and has held leadership roles, including interim director of the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, and Equity (2022–2023) and department chair (2014–2021). Early’s work bridges literary criticism, cultural studies, and African American history, with a focus on sports, race, and identity. He earned his PhD in English from Cornell University.
His research interests include American culture, prizefighting, Black studies, and the intersection of sports with social justice. Notable publications include The Culture of Bruising (1994, National Book Critics Circle Award winner) and Play Harder (2025, co-authored with the National Baseball Hall of Fame). His essays and anthologies explore topics ranging from Jackie Robinson’s legacy to the cultural impact of jazz and boxing.
Awarded fellowships by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and honored with a Grammy nomination, Early has also served as a consultant for Ken Burns’ documentaries. He co-founded the Common Reader, WashU’s interdisciplinary journal. His recent curatorial work includes the Baseball Hall of Fame’s Souls of the Game exhibit (2024).
Early’s contributions extend beyond academia through public lectures, editorial roles, and advocacy for Black studies. He remains a leading voice in American cultural criticism and the history of African American achievement.
