Claire Smith serves as the Founding Executive Director of the Claire Smith Center for Sports Media and an Assistant Professor of Practice in the Department of Journalism at the Lew Klein College of Media and Communication, Temple University. She returned to her alma mater in July 2021 after a 40-year pioneering career in sports journalism, where she broke barriers as the first female to cover a major-league baseball beat full-time for the Hartford Courant and later as a national baseball columnist for The New York Times.

Her research and professional focus centers on sports journalism, media's societal impact, and diversity in journalism. With four decades of experience, Smith has been a leading voice for African American writers and editors, shaping sports media discourse through critical analysis of baseball history, media representation, and cultural influence. She teaches undergraduate courses including 'Writing and Reporting' and 'The Influence of Sports Media on Modern Society', emphasizing the intersection of sports, race, gender, and media ethics in contemporary culture.

Committed to nurturing future journalists, Smith established the Bernice A. Smith scholarship through the Black Women in Sports Foundation, supporting Temple University students who demonstrate exceptional drive and passion for learning. Her leadership extends to serving on Baseball Hall of Fame Era committees and as former New York chapter chair of the Baseball Writers Association of America, while actively mentoring through scholarship programs and curriculum development focused on inclusive sports media practices.
