Georgios Panagis is a Professor of Biopsychology at the Department of Psychology, University of Crete. His research centers on neural reward systems and their role in addiction to psychotropic substances (e.g., nicotine, cannabinoids) and mental disorders such as mood disorders. He has held visiting professorships at the Charité – University Medicine in Berlin and the University of Cagliari.
- Education: Graduated from the Department of Philosophy and Social Studies (1992) and Psychology (1995) at the University of Crete; PhD in Medicine (1996) focusing on the ventral striatum and reward behavior.
Research Interests: Investigates interactions between exercise and brain reward systems, the neurobiology of bipolar disorders, and protective/predisposing factors in substance use disorders. His work spans neuropharmacology, behavioral neuroscience, and synaptic function.
Publications Trends: Recent articles highlight his focus on cannabinoids, psychostimulants, and psychopharmacological interventions in reward systems, with emphasis on neuroplasticity and receptor mechanisms.
