Georgii I. Nikonov is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Brock University, where he leads a research group focused on organometallic chemistry and catalysis. His work bridges fundamental and applied chemistry, with emphasis on developing efficient catalysts for sustainable transformations of organic substrates.
Research interests span organometallic synthesis, transition metal hydrides, bond activation mechanisms, and molecular magnetism. Current projects target catalytic reduction of challenging substrates (nitriles, amides, heteroaromatics) and design of new ligand environments for selective transformations.
His group maintains strong collaborations internationally and utilizes advanced techniques including X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and magnetometry. Research is funded by NSERC and other agencies.
Awards include the Distinguished Researcher Award (2019) and Jack Miller Award for Excellence in Research (2022).
He mentors graduate and undergraduate researchers in synthetic chemistry, with current advisees working on projects ranging from main-group catalysis to molecular magnetism. The lab operates in Brock's Cairns Complex with specialized equipment for air-sensitive synthesis and characterization.
